Klipsch RP-280F Floorstanding Speakers Review
Initial Impressions
Upon purchasing and first seeing the massive Klipsch RP-280Fs, my excitement was sky-high, much to the chagrin of my partner, who feared these ‘big huge boxes’ would disrupt her carefully curated décor. She was not thrilled about the price drop from $599.99 to $479.99, which was the perfect excuse for bringing these once coveted, now owned, sound towers into our apartment. But what can you do when Amazon conveniently drops the price like that?
Setup and Hardware Compatibility
Setting up the RP-280F’s was hassle-free. On connecting these to my much-loved Onkyo TXNR-656 receiver and Epson 3700 projector and playing some music, I was left reeling with the word ‘wow’ repeatedly playing on my lips. After a quick re-calibration with the mic that came with the receiver, my apartment was filled with immersive sound, transporting me to a world far beyond the confines of my living room.
I was pleasantly surprised by the compatibility with my existing setup, including a Klipsch R112W subwoofer and RP 250C center speaker. It felt like a seamless upgrade of my previous Bose 7.1 system.
Sound Quality and Performance
I must address the elephant in the room here – these towers produce an exceptional sound that fills the room. The first time I turned them on, I had no words to explain the sound quality that emanated from these towers. The highs are clear and ultra-rich, and the bass is unbelievably powerful. I had never heard such a broad range of sound from floor-standing speakers.
Suffice it to say that the RP-280F towers strike a good balance between loudness and clarity. The impressive sound extended well beyond normal volume levels with minimal distortion, even up to 95Db. Kudos to Klipsch for the speakers’ efficiency in churning out high-quality sound even with low power. I finally understood what the deal was with Klipsch’s sensitivity claim.
Subwoofer Performance and Bass Response
What genuinely baffles me is the deep and clean bass that the RP-280F produces. They churn out an intense bass comparable with a standalone sub. I found the bass response so strong that I barely need my subwoofer when listening to music. My skepticism about the bass capabilities of a floor-standing speaker was well and truly dispelled. It seemed, at least from my experience, that these RP-280Fs had been designed to deliver a complete and well-rounded audio experience.
Volume Range
When it comes to volume, the speakers shine at higher volumes. With a sensitivity of 98dB, they’re incredibly efficient and can belt out a sound using low power. They navigate the fine line of high volume without distortion masterfully. They’re loud enough to annoy my neighbors yet maintain a mind-blowing sound quality.
Aesthetics and Build
We cannot just overlook the aesthetic appeal of these towers. The boxes look fabulous with the different trim pieces, which the seller soon fixed. Whether you find the size overwhelming or not, there’s no denying that these speakers immediately stand out and make a bold statement. They are hefty and sturdy, and the build quality is top-notch.
The Downsides
Not everything about these speakers is perfect, however. While their performance is excellent, I did have a few gripes. They’re somewhat short on performance compared to their more expensive sibling, the RF 7 lll. If you’re a real audiophile, you might want to save up more for that extra level of auditory excellence. Also, they’re pretty significant. They can be somewhat imposing in a small apartment, so be sure your space can accommodate them comfortably.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Exceptional sound quality – clear highs and powerful bass
- Beautiful aesthetics
- Sturdy build quality
- Easily configurable with existing hardware
- Efficient, high-performance speakers
Cons:
- Size might be a concern for some
- Sound might be more enjoyable at higher volumes
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Klipsch RP-280F floor-standing speakers were a great purchase. It might take some time to break them in, but once they’re rolling, the sound is heavenly. Also, as a note to potential buyers, consider your room acoustics when purchasing these speakers. In my experience, rooms with carpet floors maximized the sound experience far more than raw wooden ones.
