Martin Logan 35XT Bookshelf Speakers Review
Introduction
In the quest for the ultimate mid-priced bookshelf speaker, I chanced upon the Martin Logan 35XT speakers. After an extensive run with these speakers, I feel compelled to pen down a Martin Logan 35XT bookshelf speakers review. This review is based on my usage and experience with these speakers, contrasting opinions from other users.
Design and Look
The ML 35XT bookshelf speakers are compact, measuring 7.5″ wide x 13.5″ high x 10″ deep. Unlike their small size, the speakers have an opulent and aesthetically appealing look similar to other high-end speakers in the market, enhancing the décor of the room it is placed in.
The ML 35XT speakers are rear-ported, which means they need to be placed at a considerable distance from the rear wall for optimal sound reproduction. The overall finish of the ML 35XT is top-notch for its price, comparable to other high-end speaker ranges and brands.
Sound Quality
Regarding sound quality, the Martin Logan 35XT Bookshelf Speakers seem to rise above even my previous Elan 10’s. The midrange sounds live and transparent; I appreciate how the vocals in action movies do not get smeared, which is prevalent in many speakers.
Upon first listening, it was clear that the ML 35XT speakers were an audiophile’s dream—clean highs, accurate instruments, and a great sense of being there at the location of the recording. They create an expansive and detailed live image.
The sound quality in larger spaces is impressively enhanced. In my 15′ x 20′ living room with an 11′ ceiling, the sound was more open, the image was bigger, and it felt more live.
However, like all audio products, the ML 35XT speakers have shortcomings. The biggest one is the limited bass extension. Coming from someone who had used the SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers, my expectation for a lower frequency punch was unmet. Post-burn-in, the bass felt soft, and this deficiency could leave users wanting more, particularly in musical pieces that require a strong bass.
Speaker Integration
To tackle the bass deficiency, I coupled the ML 35XT speakers with an SVS subwoofer, which rectified the lack of bass punch and provided a well-rounded sound spectrum. I set the ML 35XT crossover (in my preamp) at 80hz and the SVS crossover at 60hz. This setup worked perfectly in my environment.
Note that this might differ for others, and your room acoustics play a significant role in the final sound output. Another supplementing factor was integrating the Martin Logan Motion 30 center speaker, which provided a rich stage with fantastic detail.
Comparison with Other Speaker’s Brands
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to try many top-quality speakers ranging from SVS Ultra, PSB Image, and Monitor Audio, among others. The ML 35XT speakers easily topped the chart for me, even removing another thin veil in the mid-range and highs compared to my previous favorite, the Elan 10s.
However, it is pertinent to mention that the ML 35XT might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and other brands like Definitive Technological SM65 Studio Monitors could be a better choice for some.
Listening Experience
My experience with many users helped me understand that audio products should be tested in true-to-life scenarios rather than just examining data and specifications. The ML 35XTs blew me away during my TV sessions, classical music stints, and even a casual music listening session. However, with certain musical pieces that require a heavy bass, such as Rachmaninov Symphony No.3, these speakers might fall a bit short without a subwoofer.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Compact Size and Exquisite Design
- Excellent Vocal Clarity
- Value for Money
Cons:
- Subdued Bass
- Sound Spectrum Needs a Subwoofer for Full Range
- Not the Best Speaker for Small Spaces
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Martin Logan 35XT offers an excellent price range performance, proving a worthy purchase. However, for optimal performance, a good subwoofer must be coupled with it for a well-rounded sound. Whether they would be the perfect fit for you depends greatly on your listening preferences and retailing space.
